Letter

Dear Mr. Gittens:

In the last meeting of 19 January, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the concept design for the "Transit" sculpture by Wendy Ross to be located in the Mount Vernon Square/Convention Center Metro Station entrance at 7th and M Streets, NW. The Commission members felt the sphere was the strongest part of the sculpture, expressing concerns about the armature that supports the sphere, which appears to be too fragile and tentative and lacks a three-dimensional quality. If the sphere cannot be suspended from the ceiling, they recommended that the concept should be reevaluated to allow the sphere or a portion of a sphere to be placed on the ground, enhancing the most effective part of the existing sculpture.

The Commission requests that the project be resubmitted for concept review with the artist present for the presentation and discussion. As always, the Commission staff is available should you require further assistance.

Sincerely,

/s/
