Letter
Dear Secretary Rumsfeld:
In the meeting of 20 April, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the revised concept design for the Pentagon Memorial for the Victims of September 11, 2001. As outlined in the Commission's letter of 30 June 2003, the members continued to express concern about the complex technical issues and the long-term durability and maintenance of the design as proposed. They requested additional information on the design development of site lighting, design and maintenance of the gravel surfaces, and the specification and size of trees with particular reference to the potential to provide shade.
The Commission members requested the opportunity to inspect a mock-up of the commemorative bench and fountain unit prior to the next submission. As always, the staff is available to assist you and your project team.
Sincerely,
Thomas Luebke, AIA
Secretary
The Honorable Donald Rumsfeld
