Letter
Dear Mr. McGill:
In the meeting of 20 April, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the concept design for the proposed perimeter security modifications at the Office of Personnel Management, Theodore Roosevelt Building, located at 1900 E Street, NW. The combination of low stone-clad walls, cable-reinforced fence, bollards, planters, benches, replacement guard booths, and landscaping was seen as a thoughtful solution to the various conditions affecting the need for security around the building.
The Commission recommended further study of the detailing of the granite walls around the air intakes flanking the building entrance on Virginia Avenue to relate them more closely to the pattern of the building facades. In considering the placement of the fence and narrowing the sidewalk along Virginia Avenue, careful attention is required to protect the large existing trees.
The Commission looks forward to the review of the final drawings and details, with material samples and landscape plan, as the design develops. As always, the Commission staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
Thomas Luebke, AIA
