Letter
Dear Mr. Cox:
In its meeting of 20 March, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the revised master plan submission for the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) in Washington, D.C., located at 3700 North Capitol Street, NW.
In their discussion of the proposed redevelopment of the 272-acre historic campus, the Commission members continued to question the character and intensity of development proposed for this spectacular physical resource in the city. They voiced particular concern for the development proposed for Zones B and C, commenting that the loss of what has historically been a green landscape would be detrimental to the character of the campus and the adjacent neighborhood; they supported the community and public agency recommendations that these areas would best be park land that is accessible to the public. The Commission therefore did not approve any proposed development in Zones B and C, while approving the other elements of the revised master plan for the campus.
The Commission members look forward to further review of refinements to the master plan and the proposals for specific building projects. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/
