Letter
Dear Ms. O'Dell:
The Commission of Fine Arts appreciated the opportunity to hear the information presentation on the pre-design program for the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Memorial at its meeting of 20 November. The Commission members expressed support for the overall planning process for this presidential memorial and offered several comments regarding the design.
The Commission members supported the intention to develop a design that emphasizes a single theme, commenting that this approach will discourage the common tendency toward filling a large site with many disparate features. They emphasized that this plaza should be considered foremost as an urban space playing a role in the city, such as Trafalgar Square in London, where the commemorative element is situated within the larger composition.
The Commission looks forward to seeing the proposals of the design finalists when available. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
