Letter
Dear Mr. Wiedefeld:
In its meeting of 21 March, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative concept designs for a canopy to cover the Judiciary Square Metro station’s north escalator wellway, adjacent to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. The Commission approved the alternative labeled Option 3A, as shown in the presentation and submission materials.
The Commission members observed that Option 3A, which includes side extensions intended to reduce the visibility of its side structural beams, will balance the concerns regarding the new canopy’s impact within the context of the memorial plaza and convey the important iconic image of a standard Metro canopy. They did not support raising the rear of the canopy beyond what was shown in Option 3A.
The Commission members expressed appreciation for the presentation of previously requested additional information and for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s consultation with the memorial’s architect and sponsoring organization. They encourage this dialogue to continue as the project is further developed. Please coordinate the final submission with the staff which, as always, is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
