Dear Mr. Vogel:

In its meeting of 21 April, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed concept design alternatives for the rehabilitation of Arlington Memorial Bridge, which includes replacement of the bascule span structure, repair of the approach spans, cleaning of the stone veneer and balustrades, and replacement of the concrete deck of the entire bridge. The Commission approved the National Park Service's preferred Alternative 1B and delegated review of the final design to the Commission staff.

The Commission members emphasized the importance of Arlington Memorial Bridge as the city's most iconic and symbolic bridge. They endorsed the preferred alternative which approximates the historic appearance of the obsolete bascule span, with the proposed overall rehabilitation that will ensure the bridge's continued function for many years; and they encouraged that the project be undertaken as quickly as possible.

Please coordinate with the staff for the documentation and delegated review of the final design.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
