Letter
Dear Mr. Lew:
In its meeting of 21 January, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the proposed concept design for the modernization of Bernard T. Janney Elementary School at 4130 Albemarle Street, NW.
The members of the Commission commented that the proposed design respects the historic school building while establishing a strong presence for the addition with a thoughtful progression of transitions. However, they recommended further development of several elements. They noted that the architectural strength of the addition is diminished on the south elevation, particularly at the pre-kindergarten classroom wing. They also noted that the grand stair and architectural frame of the multi-purpose room may appear as a primary entrance to the school; they recommended that it be better integrated with the routes of approach to the school, particularly from the west side of the site.
As always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
