Dear Mr. Martin:
At the recent public meeting of the Commission of Fine Arts on 21 July 2005, the Commission members discussed the design for a statue of John Phillip Sousa at the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks Annex and Band Facility. The Commission members approved in concept the design as proposed but requested that the artist reconsider the design of the base of the sculpture to create a less formal, more approachable setting for the statue of the noteworthy conductor and composer.
The Commission looks forward to seeing the final refinements of the statue's design at a later review. As always, the Commission staff is available should you require further guidance.
