Letter
Dear Mr. Etzkorn:
In its meeting of 21 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the revised concept design for restoration and rehabilitation of Eastern Market at 225 Seventh Street, SE. The Commission members expressed appreciation for the project team's prompt efforts to respond to the damage from the fire on 30 April and to restore the original roof design by Adolph Cluss.
The Commission suggested that the historic style of exterior light fixtures be considered throughout the project site rather than including modern lampposts on the north plaza. The project team and members of the community raised several concerns about the technical details of the proposed skylights, ventilators, and glazing; since these concerns primarily involve the balance between historic detailing and operational needs, the Commission recommended that these issues be addressed through the review process of the D.C. Historic Preservation Office.
With these comments, the Commission approved the revised concept and delegated final review to the staff. Please submit the project for final review when ready. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/
