Dear Mr. Hollis:

In its public meeting of 22 January conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed design alternatives for the obverse of the 2027–2030 Youth American Sports Quarter, which is required by law to depict President George Washington on the obverse. The Commission provided the following recommendations and comments.

In their discussion, the Commission members commented favorably on obverse #1, the recommendation of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, finding it to be strong and timeless. However, they recommended selection of obverse #3A for the series, finding the depiction of Washington in his role as leader of the Continental Army to be appropriate for the commemoration of the nation’s Semiquincentennial. For the development of the design, they suggested depicting the president at a slightly older age.

The Commission looks forward to reviewing design alternatives for the reverses of this coin series. As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,
