Letter
Dear Mr. Hollis:
In its public meeting of 22 January conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a set of alternative designs for the 2027 issue of a gold coin and silver medal in the American Liberty series, which is intended to present allegorical interpretations of the concept of liberty. The Commission provided the following recommendations and comments.
Finding that most of the obverse alternatives appeared as portraiture rather than allegory, the Commission members recommended obverse #6, an image of the mythological Pegasus, as the most appropriate alternative for the coin’s theme. They recommended reverse #7, with the suggestion to remove the hand on which the bald eagle is perched. For the medal, they advised including the inscriptions “In God We Trust” on the obverse and “E Pluribus Unum” on the reverse in order to make it consistent with the coin.
As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
