Dear Mr. Brown:
The Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the concept submission for the building modernization and additions to Cardozo High School, at 1300 Clifton Street, NW, during its 25 January 2005 meeting and approved the concept design with one suggestion for additional study. The members felt that the curved shape of the upper roof on the new gymnasium addition should be reconsidered and that a more traditional form, which retained the clear-story windows, would be more appropriate for the addition and more in keeping with the character of the historic original school building. Otherwise, they were very pleased with the balance of the project.
When the design has been further refined, it should be submitted, along with material samples, for the next review. We look forward to the review of this and other future projects from the District of Columbia Public Schools. As always, the staff is available should you or the design team require guidance.
