Letter
Dear Mr. Morey:
In its meeting of 18 January, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a revised concept design for a new hospital building and extensive site improvements at the north end of the Georgetown University campus (case number OG 18-072). The Commission approved the design and provided the following comments to guide the preparation of a final design submission.
The Commission members commended the development of the design, citing the clear presentation and the careful detailing of the new building and campus landscape. They expressed strong support for the site plan, particularly the topographic alterations and paving changes that delineate the outdoor “rooms” along the north–south pedestrian circulation spine. They commented that these rooms also create favorable connections between the existing campus buildings and the extensive new hospital building. For the planting plan, they suggested the specification of medicinal plants that would have a closer thematic connection to the hospital’s mission than the common shrub and groundcover species proposed; they also suggested consideration of establishing apiaries on the green roofs.
The Commission referred the project back to the Old Georgetown Board to complete the permit review. Please coordinate with the staff which, as always, is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
