Letter
Dear Ms. Gresetenfeld:
During its meeting of 21 April 2005, the Commission reviewed and approved the proposed concept (SL 05-058) to convert the Woodward Building, located at 733 15th Street, NW, from commercial to residential use. Although the Commission appreciates the restoration of the primary facades and accepts the incorporation of a garage entry, the complete replacement of the brick skin in the light well with the proposed curtain wall or storefront enclosure system appears to be an extreme modification to the existing building. The Commission requests that the architects pursue window alternatives, such as French doors, which has the advantage of increasing the amount of glazing without changing the structural configuration of the openings. In addition, the Commission would appreciate more information about the design of the proposed roof enclosures and garage door when the project is resubmitted.
The Commission looks forward to the continued review of this project. Please submit a revised concept for review when ready. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas Luebke, AIA
