Letter
Dear Mr. Lansdale:
In its meeting of 19 April, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the concept design for the addition of a permanent rooftop enclosure at the Hay-Adams Hotel located at 800 16th Street, NW (case number SL 07-050).
In their discussion of the proposed design, the Commission members expressed their support for the concept of treating the enclosure as a garden structure. However, they recommended that careful study be given in the development of the design to lighten the scale and details of the trellis elements while darkening their color. The Commission members also suggested that other exterior materials be studied, such as using fabric at the trellis enclosures or introducing areas of solidity in the walls. They requested that the next submission include additional views of the building to assess the project’s impact on its highly prominent context overlooking Lafayette Square.
The Commission looks forward to further review of this project. As always, the Commission staff is available should you require further guidance.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, AIA
