Letter
Dear Mr. Carr:
In its meeting of 17 February, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a revised concept proposal for a new eight-story office building at 1700 New York Avenue, NW (case number SL 11-051), to be located on the undeveloped portion of the Corcoran Galleryof Art property. The Commission approved the concept design and offered comments for consideration as the design is developed.
The Commission members noted that the design of the proposed building has improved, particularly in its relation to the adjacent United Unions Building. They recommended further study of the gap between the two buildings to resolve this relationship more generously. In addition, they noted the importance of careful attention to the interior ceiling lighting, which will be a highly visible design element through the glass curtainwall. The Commission members requested that the next submission also address the design of the landscape and any exterior signs.
The Commission looks forward to the review of the next design submission for this very prominent site. As always, the staff is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
