Letter
Dear Mr. Cohen:
In its meeting of 21 July, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept design for modifications and additions to the Watergate Hotel at 2650 Virginia Avenue, NW (case number SL 11-118). The Commission supported the design for alterations to this historic property and approved the concept with recommendations for the development of the final design.
The Commission members noted that the driveway approach to the hotel, while lending some desirable privacy to the hotel entrance, suffers from a degraded visual character; they recommended that the applicant pursue improvements to this area apart from the proposed signs. In addition, they recommended that the new enclosure for the elevator extension to the roof terrace be curved in plan and similar to the character of the existing curved enclosures.
The Commission looks forward to review of the final design. As always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
