Letter

Dear Mr. Mazzuca:

In its meeting of 21 July, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept design for exterior modifications to the first three floors of the Pennsylvania Building at 425 13th Street, NW (also known as 1275 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW; case number SL 11-126). The Commission approved the concept with the following comments regarding the development of the proposal.

In their support of the proposed modifications to the first three floors, the Commission members encouraged the applicant to consider a possible recladding of the remainder of the building as a unified composition to avoid the three varying styles that would result from the proposed partial alteration. They also recommended that the proposed marquee over the 13th Street entrance be reduced in width to the center three doors, or possibly to include the small flanking windows.

The Commission looks forward to the review of the final design submission, which should include any proposed signs and banners; please note that, under the D.C. sign regulations for the Shipstead–Luce Act area, projecting and double–faced signs are not permitted. The staff is available to assist you with the next submission.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
