No objection to issuance of permit to build new porch, surround with door and transom as shown in supplemental drawings received and dated 1 February and 24 March 2010. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

Returned without action. Permit application for replacement and new roof top antennas was withdrawn by written request of applicant. File new submission of alternative studies, including technology alternatives, for relocation of antenna sectors where they will not be visible from the C & O Canal National Historical Park, for review by the Commission when ready.

The Commission regrets that sign program was installed prior to review or permit. No objection to issuance of permit for existing awnings and for sign reading 'Tara Salon Spa' on awning above entrance door ONLY. Existing drop signs below awnings, banners and advertising panels, which are not appropriate to the character of the historic district, were NOT approved and must be removed no later than 30 June 2010. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to concept design for alterations to front porch with pitched roof and segmental arch opening as indicated in supplemental drawings dated 6 April 2010. File new submission of working drawings, including details and dimensions, with permit application for review by the Commission.

No objection to issuance of permit for 'Poggen Pohl' sign suspended at storefront window and 11.25-inch high non-illuminated 'Kitchen Design Studio' channel letters above storefront cornice as shown in supplemental drawings dated 7 April 2010.

The Commission regrets that original wood window sashes, in good condition, at the front and north facades of this historic structure, part of a row of five houses dating from 1889, were replaced without a permit with fiberglass windows with full screens contrary to the previous recommendation of 18 September 2009 that the windows be retained and repaired as necessary. See attached previous Recommendation (OG 09-315). Recommend AGAINST issuance of permit for existing fiberglass window sashes which would remove the original historic wood windows and replace them with new windows whose character, material and detailing are not appropriate to the building and the historic district.

The Commission regrets that carport was erected at rear of property prior to review and without a permit. Recommend AGAINST issuance of permit for existing structure as built and for its proposed enclosure due to incompatibility of natural lattice and cedar boards with the character of the building and the historic district. Recommend filing of new submission of revised design for enclosure with siding to be painted for review by the Commission when ready.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed recovering of awnings in blue woven fabric and for existing and new signs on valances at Washington Harbour. Existing blue fabric with signs for Sequoia installed prior to review on railing at waterfront terrace was not approved and must removed no later than 30 June 2010. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed work which is repair, replacement-in-kind to match original, structural repairs, and repointing with mortar to match existing as indicated in supplemental information received and dated 22 March 2010. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed rear addition at third floor level. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed revision to permit to widen rear addition behind the hyphen by 1-ft. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to concept design for rear first floor projecting bay and second story addition with stepped parapet, door and 2/2 window alterations, and HVAC on main roof as indicated in drawings dated 1 April 2010. File new submission of working drawings, including details and dimensions, with permit application for review by the Commission when ready.

The Commission regrets that the installation of solar panels was completed prior to review or permit. No objection to issuance of permit for existing solar panels mounted on rear slope of roof which has limited visibility from public thoroughfare. Note: The L'Enfant Trust holds an easement on this property. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed sign scheme composed of pin-mounted non-illuminated letters no taller than 12-inches high reading 'Hu's Wear' to fit on frieze of cornice above entry door, and 4-inch high letters and logo applied to bottom of shop window. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to general concept for proposed alterations, including awning as shown in Scheme A of supplemental drawings dated 1 April 2010 and for sidewalk cafe with one row of tables against building. Existing light fixtures and exposed electric conduits will be removed. Recommend brick base under doors after removal of steps. Projecting sign and up-lights were NOT approved. File new submission of working drawings and design options, including site plan, details, dimensions, material samples and cafe furniture, with permit application for review by the Commission when ready.

No objection to concept design for proposed sign composed of 24-inch high pin-mounted back-lit letters reading 'UGG Australia' above second floor windows. Projecting sign was NOT approved. Replacement of storefront was withdrawn from concept design. File new submission of working drawings, including dimensions and details of installation of pin-mounted letters through mortar joints only, with permit application for review by the Commission when ready.

Returned without Action. Permit application for replacement windows was withdrawn by written request of applicant. Applicant decided to study the option of installing storm windows rather than replacing historic wood windows.

Recommend AGAINST issuance of permit for proposed replacement windows which are not appropriate to this ca. 1864 historic building. Existing single glazed wood windows must be repaired. No objection to use of storm windows.

The Commission regrets that the original masonry two-story rear wing collapsed during work on property. No objection to issuance of permit for proposed reconstruction of rear wing to match original, including jack arches at masonry openings, PROVIDED thickness of rear wall of main block of historic building at first floor level, which was removed, is physically expressed in new construction as shown in supplemental drawings dated 6 April 2010. No objection to issuance of permit for reconstruction and extension of chimney, and for roof top mechanical equipment relocated where they will not be visible from public thoroughfare. Recommend painting of face brick on reconstructed rear wing to mitigate contrast with adjacent historic brick. Existing exposed brick side wall to remain un-painted. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for new dormers at north and west and rear alterations per drawings received and dated 23 March 2010. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit to rebuild wood porch surmounted by deck with wood railings as shown in drawings received and dated 22 March 2010. Note: Any subsequent modifications to the exterior design made during DCRA technical review must be re-submitted to the Commission for approval prior to issuance of permit.

No objection to issuance of permit for proposed replacement of fence post and replacement of fence on north property line which is repair work to match existing.

Returned without Action. Submitted materials and a site visit of 31 March 2010 indicate that new French doors will not be visible from a public thoroughfare. Refer to Historic Preservation Review Board.
