Letter
Dear Mr. Cinkala:
In its meeting of 15 September, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a concept design for a new retail entrance pavilion at 435 L'Enfant Plaza, SW (case number SL 11-150), proposed to be located within the central open space of the L'Enfant Plaza complex. The Commission did not take an action and made several recommendations for further development of the proposal.
The Commission members expressed concern about the future intent to construct a large building within the plaza as potentially detrimental to the composition of the central space. Noting that the proposal is designed to accommodate the construction of such a building above and around the entrance pavilion, they observed that the pavilion design appears heavy and over–structured as a result. They recommended instead that the retail entrance be designed as a light and attractive pavilion in its own right, without the imposition of future structural requirements.
The Commission looks forward to the review of a revised concept proposal for the pavilion. As always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
