Letter
Dear Mr. Knopf:
In its meeting of 15 October, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed the final design for a new office building at 1301 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW (case number SL 15-172). The Commission approved the submission, complimenting the project team on an elegant and simple design.
In their support of the project, the Commission members expressed their particular appreciation for the incorporation of innovative technical aspects of contemporary European architecture, such as the use of external shading devices and operable windows in an office building. They recommended attention to the possible effects of a south-facing, reflective, steel-and-glass facade on the pedestrian experience and microclimate on Pennsylvania Avenue, noting that the street trees in this location will need to be able to tolerate this condition.
Please coordinate the submission of final permit documents with the staff which, as always, is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
Secretary
