Dear Ms. Mendelson-Ielmini:

In its public meeting of 18 June conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts approved, based on its prior review of the submission materials, the final design for modifications to improve access to the Lincoln Memorial and to expand the visitor support facility in its undercroft.

The Commission members recommended the project team’s preferred option for detailing the enlargement of the doorways on the east-facing walls of the memorial’s base; this option, with a visible bronze lintel as part of the enlarged doorways, is tectonically straightforward and minimizes the impact on the memorial’s walls by reducing the number of existing granite stones to be cut or removed.

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,

/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
