Letter
Dear Mr. Ziemann:
In its meeting of 19 June, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the proposed concept design for the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Memorial by sculptor Ray Kaskey for Reservation 157, located at the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue and Q and 9th Streets, NW.
The Commission members acknowledged the worthiness of the subject matter and the appropriateness of the proposed exedra form; they expressed appreciation for the opportunity to inspect a maquette for this project. They supported the proposed placement of one quote inscribed on the back of the memorial, suggesting that a darker paver be used on the plaza to more clearly differentiate the memorial rising from it.
The Commission encouraged the D.C. Department of Transportation and the Commission on the Arts and Humanities to work with the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation to ensure that the best possible landscape treatments are implemented at this important memorial.
As always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas Luebke, AIA
