Dear Ms. Gibson:

In its public meeting of 21 April conducted by videoconference, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed alternative reverse designs for the 2023 issue of the Native American One Dollar Coin series, providing the following recommendation.

For conveying the 2023 theme of “American Indians in Ballet” through a depiction of the ballerina Maria Tallchief, the Commission recommended alternative NA$1-04, consistent with the preferences of Ms. Tallchief’s family and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. The Commission members cited the elegant composition of this alternative and the inclusion of four additional dancers in the upper background who, with Ms. Tallchief, represent the prominent group of Native American ballerinas in the mid-20th century known as the “Five Moons.”

As always, the staff is available to assist you with future submissions.

Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
