Letter
Dear Mr. Harper:
In its meeting of 21 April, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed and approved the concept design for the modernization of Francis L. Cardozo High School at 1200 Clifton Street, NW.
The Commission members expressed appreciation for the thoughtful resolution of the programming and historic preservation issues in order to retain the character of the historic property. They emphasized the importance of the site's open spaces and encouraged more careful consideration of these areas as the project is further developed, with particular attention to open space that is not reserved for athletic fields. They supported the development of green roofs where feasible and the effort to restore elements of the original landscape design; they noted the importance of the surviving terraces on the east side of the building and recommended that these be rehabilitated to encourage their use.
The Commission looks forward to review of the final design. As always, the staff is available to assist you with the next submission.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
