Letter
Dear Ms. Cora:
In its meeting of 19 February, the Commission of Fine Arts reviewed a design for the installation of banner signs at the Corcoran Gallery building, located at 500 17th Street, NW (case number SL 15-068). The Commission approved the proposal for temporary exhibition and event banners, with the following comments.
The Commission members noted that signs on the Corcoran Gallery building are subject to specific Shipstead-Luce Act area sign regulations in the D.C. Building Code which strictly limit their size and other characteristics. Because some of the proposed alternatives include banners used primarily for building identification and would not comply with these regulations, they supported the installation of only the banners for temporary exhibits and events. However, they suggested that the banners could include identification of the institution within the restrictions of the applicable sign regulations for the National Historic Landmark property as a whole.
Please coordinate the submission of the final documents with the staff which, as always, is available to assist you.
Sincerely,
/s/Thomas E. Luebke, FAIA
