Consent Calendar: CFA Meeting — 20 April 2023

No objection to the final design for a new restroom to replace an existing one in the same location at the Lorraine American Cemetery in Saint-Avold, France per materials received 6 April 2023.

No objection to the concept design for new signage in bronze on the wall east of the main entrance to the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in Manila, Philippines per materials received 6 April 2023.

No objection to the final design for repairs to the foundation piers of the Great Flight Aviary and construction of an associated equipment shed, per materials received 31 March 2023. Materials indicate concrete encapsulation of the piers is needed to slow their deterioration from ASR (alkali-silica reaction), also known as "concrete cancer." The equipment shed (Life Support System building) would contain equipment associated with modifications to the pools in the Aviary. Refer to DC Historic Preservation Office.

No objection to the final design for the replacement of the vehicular security barriers and sidewalk/apron paving at the parking garage entrance, per materials received 6 April 2023. Materials indicate the existing temporary vehicular barrier will be removed and the sidewalk and driveway apron materials will be replaced in-kind.

Recommend AGAINST issuance of permit for installation of objects in public space which are incompatible with the character of the historic district. The Commission regrets that the installation has exceeded the temporary limit previously recommended for approval, and notes that one of the objects originally installed has been relocated to the roof, visible from public space, and replaced with a larger version, without review or permit. No objection to the concept design for the rehabilitation of an existing school building (currently abandoned) for the Old Miner Early Childhood Center, per materials received 6 April 2023. Scope of work includes the construction of a new covered walkway, entry vestibule, and exterior elevator enclosure. No objection to the final design for a new elevator enclosure which is necessary to improve accessibility within the existing building, as shown in materials received and dated 6 April 2023. Refer to DC Historic Preservation Office.
