Watergate Complex

Built on the site of industrial land along the Potomac River adjacent to the Kennedy Center, the Watergate Complex was designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti and incorporated new ideas of destination retail and mixed-use hotel, office, and luxury residential uses within a series of expressive architectural forms. The CFA worked to control the height of the buildings and to increase public space within the complex. Constructed between 1963 and 1971, the Watergate remains an icon of mid-20th century planning, design, and political history.
