Sculptor and CFA member Paul Manship designed the 1943 Merchant Marine Mariner’s Medal, commissioned to honor civilian sailors wounded during World War II. The medal is notable for its simple, bold design characteristic of the Modern era, combining nautical motifs with national symbols: an eagle and anchor on the obverse and a hand bearing a torch of liberty and emerging from stylized waves on the reverse.
