Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

The process to create a memorial to FDR began in the late 1950s, with a national competition that failed to garner support of the CFA and the Roosevelt family. The actual memorial was eventually designed over several decades by landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and was completed in 1997. The design for the memorial created a series of landscape “rooms” along the Tidal Basin’s western shore; the sequence of spaces presents multiple sculptural vignettes, such as this one of President Roosevelt with his dog, Fala, by Neil Estern.
