U.S. Coast Guard headquarters building, St. Elizabeths West Campus

The U.S. Coast Guard headquarters by Perkins + Will with HOK and WDG Architecture, completed in 2013, is a 1.3 million-square-foot office complex on a steeply sloping portion of the National Historic Landmark St. Elizabeths West Campus. The complex presents itself in multiple cascading tiers of glassy volumes with integrated sunshades in the upper portions over lower masonry-clad forms. The project—part of the largest single building project in Washington’s history since the Pentagon—required extensive excavation of the campus’s west slope. The CFA most recently reviewed the project in March 2011.
