The national competition-winning streetscape design by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates for permanent security on Pennsylvania Avenue at the White House was completed in 2005, creating a new public space following the avenue’s closure in 1995. The design accommodated security while addressing the urban quality of the space with bollards, trees, and differentiated paving. The CFA most recently reviewed the project in December 2003.
